So if you are in the habit of saving as you go (which is no bad thing) you will only go back to the last saved image. But all that will do is take you the last saved version. The other way to save your work from ruin is the Revert instruction under File drop down menu. By clicking on each action listed you can turn back to a particular event and review what you have done. Not many people know that you can see these History States in Window>History and in the resulting panel you can see the last 20 (or however many) actions. This however is governed by the History States under General in Preferences you can change the number of History States but the more you ask your machine to remember, the more you are taking up memory and reducing functionality. But note that by default Photoshop only lets you step backwards a maximum of 20 actions or events (the so-called History States), so that big black blob you put on your work 21 actions ago is no longer reachable. The sophistication in the undo command comes with Step Backward under Edit drop down menu (alt-command-z or alt-control-z) which lets you step back further than one step. So get to know it, and you can relax as you create. We all make errors, and this shortcut brings an immediate sigh of relief. The command-z (Mac) or control-z (PC) is the simplest way to cut stress by reverting your work to its previous state. The one keyboard shortcut that ought to be every Photoshop user’s best friend is for undo. ![]()
